Bird Log September 16th 2008

Today I went to the Glenrock Nature Reserve at about 7am in the morning. The weather was clear and sunny with a coldish west wind blowing. There was not many birds around as I wound my way over the ridge towards the creek and then followed the southern ridge along the creek line.

Crimson Rosella

The Crimson Rosella has a scientific name of Platycercus elegans and has a rich crimson body with blue cheeks and shoulders. The Crimson Rosella has a size from 35 to 38 centimetres. Their habitat is mainly forests, farm countryside, and parklands. Crimson Rosellas eat seeds and fruit and forage on the ground and in the outer leaves of trees. They breed from September to January and they will pair up permanently. The nest will be a hollow in a eucalypt tree and they have four to eight eggs which are incubated by the female from 19 to 21 days.

Noisy Miner

The Noisy Miner has a scientific name of Manorina melanocephala. They feed mainly on insects and various invertebrates, as well as fruit and nectar. The Noisy Miner is extremely territorial and aggressive and will combine to attack other birds as well as larger animals such as snakes or goannas. They are very communal and will feed, bathe, and sleep together. They breed from June to December and have two to four eggs which are incubated by the female in about 15 days. Their habitat is open forest lands, cleared remnant forests, and suburban woodlands.

Brown Cuckoo-Dove

The Brown Cuckoo-Dove has a scientific name of Macropygia amboinensis and has a size of from 30 to 45 centimetres. The habitat of the brown cuckoo-dove is rainforest fringes, and the understory along creeks or rivers. They range along the east coast of australia and breed from July to January. The Brown Cuckoo-dove has one egg which is incubated for 16 to 18 days by both parents.
