Rio Dulce to Finca Tatin

The lancha picked me up at 9:30am from the hotel and we wandered around for a while before we set off up the river towards Livingston. We stopped at an island that had Great Egrets and Cattle Egrets perched on the trees, along with cormorants. Nothing new. We continued up river where we stopped at a hot water spring. No-one went for a swim. We went up the river a little way and stopped in at Finca Tatin, where I got off.

White Hawk (Pseudastor albicollis)
White Hawk (Pseudastor albicollis)

That afternoon I went for a walk along the jungle track until I came to a clearing used for growing stuff like papaya trees. I saw this white hawk in the distance, so I moved closer. Luckily it stayed where it was until I got close enough for a decent shot. It was pretty easy to identify – a White Hawk.

Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens)
Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens)

I caught this strange shot of a Magnificent Frigatebird scooping water just in front of a boy in a canoe. Very interesting.

Mangrove Swallow (Tachycineta albilinea)

This Mangrove Swallow was perched near a huge bed of water lilies.

Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephalus)

I got this Black-headed Trogon just near my shack when I was heading back this morning.

I am not real sure about this and it is a really crappy photo.

Rio Dulce Guatemala Birding

Hotel Kangaroo.

After the tranquility of Finca Ixobel, I caught an air-conditioned bus to Rio Dulce, where I rang up for a lancha to the hotel on the water, the Kangaroo Hotel. More tranquil bliss, I cannot stand it!

Green Kingfisher - female
Green Kingfisher (Chloroceryle americana) female

This morning I caught a colectivo to Finca Paraiso. There is a hot waterfall there. It drops into a cold river. I think it comes out of a volcano or something. But it was nice swimming in the pool and having a sauna in the cave behind it. Oh, and I photographed a Green Kingfisher.

The main distinguishing marks are the small size (20 cms) and the spots on the wings.

Ringed Kingfisher

The worst photo ever seen of a Ringed Kingfisher. #recordshot

Louisiana Waterthrush

Some decent photos of earlier stuff that was pretty crap and shot in dark light. This morning at Finca Ixobel, Poptun, Guatemala.

Collared Aracari
Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus)

This Collared Aracari has a broken bottom bill. He seems to be doing all right, but.

White-collared Seedeater
White-collared Seedeater (Sporophila torqueola)

The ruddy wash on the chest of this White-collared Seedeater means it is a Caribbean slopes race. Do not know the name. Must look it up. Nah,can’t find anything definitive on it.

Tikal Part Two

The second part of my day out at Tikal, Peten. The highlight of the day would have been this Slaty-tailed Trogon but she was under the canopy and the photos were really crap. 🙁

Up this morning at 5am and I caught the tourist bus to Tikal. A cup of cofee and a sandwich for breakfast and through the gate after paying 150 Quetzals. I walked for ages. So much I got a bruise on my heel.

Biotopo Cerro Cahui Part Two

Tbis is part two of my walk along the lake at El Remate. I went for a walk along the track at the Biotopo itself, but I got attacked my a million mosquitoes and you could not seen anything because the track was covered over by bushes and trees. I went about half way and turned back. There were hardly any birds along the track anyway. There were more along the lake road.

Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture
Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture (Cathartes burrovianus)

I thought this was a Turkey Vulture at first so I did not pay much attention to it. I was wrong, doh! I cannot remember if I saw one at Palenque or not.

Red-winged Blackbird
Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoenicus)

I knew I had seen this one in the book, I thought it was a cowbird at first but it is a blackbird. It was just sitting by the lake preening itself. Thank you very much.

I got on the bus from Coban at 8:30 am and had to change at the San Antonio Crossroads. Then on to Sayaxche where I had some fried chicken and crossed the river on a boat, then changed Collectivos to get to Santa Elena. Then I had to change buses at the terminal and get one to El Remate, dodging rain bursts on the way.
