Tailorbirds

Tailorbirds – Orthotomus genus.

“Tailorbirds belong to the genus Orthotomus. The genus contains 13 species. Recent research suggests they belong in the Cisticolidae family. Tailorbirds have short rounded wings, short tails, strong legs and long curved bills. The tail is typically held upright, like a wren. Tailorbirds get their name from the way their nest is constructed. The edges of a large leaf are pierced and sewn together with plant fibre or spider’s web to make a cradle in which the actual grass nest is built.” (wiki)

Pulau Pangkor – Teluk Nipah

Yesterday afternoon I went up to the mountain between Sungai Pinang Kechil and Teluk Dalam. I stopped a few times and was rewarded with some good views of Cream-vented Bulbuls. This morning I went to Teluk Nipah and walked along the track to the waterfall. Not much there and it started to rain a little bit. Lucky I got back early beacause it poured later on.

Pulau Pangkor – Hutan Lipur

I grabbed my rental motorbike at about 8am and set off around the island pas Telok Dalam to Hutan Lipur, a bit of forest that has been forgotten about with a wrecked road and a resort at the end of it that is deserted. After that, I kept going to Telok Nipah and found a few more birds. Nothing new today, it was actually a bit of a dud. But you never know.

Pulau Pangkor 3 – Telok Dalam

I got on the motorbike early this morning and I had got to a track just after the sun would come up. The only problem was it was overcast so there were not that many birds around. Eventually after doing a lot of searching I came up with a couple of new birds and some relatively decent photos. So the morning was not a complete waste.

Pulau Pangkor – Sungai Pinang Kechil

I hired a motorbike this morning to go see around the island of Pangkor. I stopped at a few chinese cemeteries and got some photos of some bulbuls. There were heaps of Oriental Pied Hornbills around. Last night I counted more than twenty near the road just before sunset. I went right around the island. I was a bit late so I did not worry about chasing birds so much as discovering places that I could come back to later. I found quite a few. Let us see what tomorrow may bring.

I got the bus from the Cameron Islands really early, like 8am, and I did not get to Pulau Pangkor until late in the afternoon, 3pm. Such a massive journey. I found my guest house and settled in. This morning I was up a bit late, and went for a walk along the road that circles the island.

Cameron Highlands – Tanah Rata Day Three

This morning I got up a bit later and wandered down to the start of the Trail 4. There were some black clouds up above the mountain, and it was a bit cold and windy. Consequently there were far fewer birds around than yesterday. All in all a very lean morning’s birding. And the photos are not that great either! Very low light and hard to get decent focus.
