Pakse

Southern Laos Tourism.

Today was the worst bus trip ever! It took us more than eight hours to get 180 kilometers. We got on the bus at 7am at Savannakhet. And before half way there, the bus chugs to a halt. The bus driver and his doods get under the bus and work on it. A long time later and the bus starts again.

It seems like it was the diesel fuel not getting to the motor. So they have a can of diesel sitting up on the floor near the driver feeding diesel into the motor. And of course, the motor stalls and they have to bleed the air out of the fuel lines.

And then later still, they run out of fuel from the jury-rigged jerry-can fuel tank, and it leaks all over the floor of the bus, then they get another leak and have to buy some hose at the hardware shop, ad nauseum. After about seven hours, the adventure of it all started wearing thin, and I was bored and annoyed by the stupid antics of the bus driver and his moronic minions.

We finally arrived in Pakse and found a guest house and I went around late in the afternoon to check it out. It is actually quite a nice place.

Then I found the markets, witnessed the aftermath of a car accident and the arrival of Pakse CSI where they painted the location of the vehicles with spray paint, had some sandwiches for dinner, got a BeerLao at the supermarket and spent most of the evening teaching some Lao young people some English. hmm that last bit was not quite grammatically correct but I can’t work out where. Can you spot the mistake?
