Al Marfa Day Two

Al Marfa Birding Day Two.

I solved my problem of my deflating air-bed. I bought a foam mattress! United Arab Emirates is not that expensive if you have a head on your shoulder. My mattress only cost 60 Dirham($20) – it would cost $100 back home. Last night I had a feed at where the Indian workers eat and it only cost 7 Dirham($2.50). Fuel is super cheap and my rental car works out at less than $30 per day.

This morning I got up before sparrow fart and headed for the beach I found yesterday but the tide was way way out and not a wader to be seen anywhere. Yesterday I spotted Greater Flamingo, Bar-tailed Godwit and Dunlin on the beach at high tide.

I headed back to the fishing boat beach and found quite a few birds. A couple of new ones and the same old ones as yesterday.

After birding I took off out to the end of the breakwater to have some breakfast. Some fishermen had slept the night under the stars in their swags. Then it was fill up the water bottles, have a rough wash and head down to the library, where I am processing nearly 500 photos.

I am going west to Ruwais this afternoon. I am going to catch the ferry to Delma Island. There is one late this afternoon and one early in the morning. I do not know which one I will catch yet. Maybe wait till I get there.

Dunlin (Calidris alpina)

I should do a budget for my trip to the UAE. I am pretty convinced that you can do it for less than $50 a day. Rent a car, buy some camping gear and cook your own meals or eat at workers’ restaurants. My camping gear cost me 600 dirham($200). That is 20 dirham a day ($6.50). Food could be whatever you like. Buy your own and cook it or eat out. $5 a day for petrol. You cannot buy alcohol, so there is another expense down the gurgler.
