NSW up the coast

Mid-north Coast Surfing

I am going back up the coast of New South Wales. Finally I found some decent surf just south of Forster at Seven Mile Beach, which is in Booti Booti National Park.

There was not much until I got to Look At Me Now Headland, the back beach to Emerald Beach just north of Coffs Harbour.

Margaret River Surfing

I arrived in Margaret River in the morning late and the wind was still blowing off-shore, so I headed out to Surfer’s Point to get a few photos. There was a lot of guys out and it was a bit small for Margaret River. Not a great many good surfers out but I managed to get a few reasonable photos.

Bird and Waves

Far West Coast – South Australia

I spent a few days at Elliston. The weather was incredibly hot so I spent the most of the day swimming and having cold showers. Then I moved on to Smoky Bay where there were a few birds on the mangroves and rock shelfs to the east of the boat ramp.

This was the only photo worth showing from Smoky Bay. These Rock Parrots were feeding in the mangroves right next to the ocean.

Lower Eyre Peninsula Surfing

Yesterday morning I had no plan as to what I was going to do. So I just set off along the highway heading west. I spotted this sign leading to a lookout so I headed up the hill hoping to get a look at the ocean. And what did I find? A bunch of dudes surfing this gnarly rock ledge.

El Gringo – Arica – Day 2

This morning I went to El Gringo again. It was a bit smaller but there were a few more guys out. The wind was blowing off-shore nicely and there were shifting peaks to be had.

Surfing El Gringo – Arica, Chile

I got out of bed about 7:30am because that is when the sun comes up. Chile is two hours ahead of Peru. Do not ask me to work that one out. I walked down the end of the street and caught a bus to La Isla del Alacran. There was nobody out when I went surfing but I bumped into a couple of dudes named Max and Diego who allowed me to tag along when they went for a surf out at El Gringo.

Diego's First Wave
Diego’s First Wave

El Gringo is really scary. It breaks onto rocks. There is no easy way out or in. You have to jump off the rocks and force your way out through the very powerful breaking waves.

After this wave Maxi lost his boogie board and had to swim in. It was a major struggle with waves breaking all over him and the rip dragging him out again.

Maxi eventually got in and retrieved his boogie board and then paddled straight out again!

Maxi hit a bump on the take-off and got launched.

There were some good right-handers coming in as well. Some of them were lining up and tubing massively.

The wind starting blowing onshore about ten o’clock so the waves were still glassy.

Diego made sure that his last wave was a good one. Thank you to Maxi and Diego for the opportunity to take some photos at this famous surf spot. Woot!

Mollendo to Arica

I got going from Mollendo about 10am and walked up the hill to get a taxi to Ilo. At Ilo I swapped over and got another collectivo taxi to Tacna.

I found my hostel next to the bus terminal in Tacna and settled in for the night. I got all my money changed over to Chilean pesos and so I was set to go. The next morning I walked up the road to the international terminal and jumped straight into a taxi for the border. The border was the easiest and quickest one I have ever been through. I arrived at the terminal in Arica, Chile, got a new chip for my phone, changed the rest of my money and found my way to the next hostel.

In the afternoon I blundered around until I found my way to the surf spot at Arica. The wind was wrong but I saw how it broke. There were some guys surfing around the other side.

I am going to go back tomorrow morning early to see if I can get some photos on my real camera.

Just a few photos from a couple of days at Jaco, on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. There were quite a few good surfers out so I was able to get some nice shots.

I arrived here in El Tunco yesterday and late in the afternoon I went for a walk to see what the waves were like.

Going North in Morocco

Immsouane – Essaouira – Safi

Here are some of the tourist photos that I have taken on the way from Immsouane to Safi. There was nothing else to do in Immsouane. It was a small village on the edge of a barren desert-like landscape. There were two beaches and one of them was very protected from the north wind. And excellent for beginners to learn surfing.

I was lucky getting from Immsouane. I bumped into some Canadians in the village and we shared a taxi to the highway. We waited five minutes and then a bus came along. My hostel was easy to find but not very nice. I spent most of my time walking around the old city and the fishing harbour.

Grilled sardines were popular with the tourists. I never seen so many white pasty-skinned Europeans.

This morning I caught the bus from Essaouira, glad to escape my horrible hostel. Walked down the road to my luxury hotel with TV and air-conditioning and had a nice hot shower. After that I got a taxi to the beach but the waves were a bit too small. Nevertheless, there were a couple of keen guys out surfing.

I walked about a kilometer and got a taxi back to my hotel, had a quarter chicken for dinner and am now sorting out all my photos, watching French TV.
