Surfing at Jaco – Costa Rica

Just a few photos from a couple of days at Jaco, on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. There were quite a few good surfers out so I was able to get some nice shots.

Surfing in El Salvador

I arrived here in El Tunco yesterday and late in the afternoon I went for a walk to see what the waves were like.

The waves were not fantastic but they were ok. There were a few guys getting some good rides but not that many.

Going North in Morocco

Immsouane – Essaouira – Safi

Here are some of the tourist photos that I have taken on the way from Immsouane to Safi. There was nothing else to do in Immsouane. It was a small village on the edge of a barren desert-like landscape. There were two beaches and one of them was very protected from the north wind. And excellent for beginners to learn surfing.

I was lucky getting from Immsouane. I bumped into some Canadians in the village and we shared a taxi to the highway. We waited five minutes and then a bus came along. My hostel was easy to find but not very nice. I spent most of my time walking around the old city and the fishing harbour.

Grilled sardines were popular with the tourists. I never seen so many white pasty-skinned Europeans.

All the fishing boats were painted blue. I have no idea how they knew which was which.

This morning I caught the bus from Essaouira, glad to escape my horrible hostel. Walked down the road to my luxury hotel with TV and air-conditioning and had a nice hot shower. After that I got a taxi to the beach but the waves were a bit too small. Nevertheless, there were a couple of keen guys out surfing.

I walked about a kilometer and got a taxi back to my hotel, had a quarter chicken for dinner and am now sorting out all my photos, watching French TV.

Taghazout to Cap Ghir

Boiler Point Excursion.

This morning after breakfast I walked up the hill from the Taghazout village to the highway roundabout and caught the 33 bus which goes to Thamri. I got off at the end of Cap Ghir. I did not know there was a surfing spot there. It is called Boiler Point.

The tide was coming in fast so there were not many waves. When I came back later no-one was out because the waves were not even breaking any more. There were a heap of fishing boats out to sea.

And quite a few rock fishermen trying their luck. I only saw them catch one fish.

Anchor Point Surfing and Birds

Taghazout Birds and Surfing.

I set off early from Mirleft after having breakfast and saying an emotional goodbye to my French friends. I have met some really nice people in Morocco. I got a shared taxi from Mirleft to Tiznit. Then I got a really old Mercedes Grand Taxi and was squashed up in the back, my foot went to sleep and it was so dead I could not move it. When I got to Agadir I got a taxi all to myself for only 60 Dirhams and arrived about mid-day or so.

After a shower and a shave I headed out to the beach and followed the coast out to Anchor Point. The surf was totally flat, the tide was going out and there were only a few guys out.

The waves were breaking a bit close to the rocks. I was expecting someone to wipe out and smash into the rocks but it did not happen. I also took some photos of birds along the way. I was lucky to get a few new races of species already photographed.

Barcelona Birding and Surfing

Llobregat Delta Again.

I hired a bike from the hostel this morning and that saved the legs a few kilometers walking. There was not much around. No birds, that is. Plenty of people out for their Sunday walk, run, bike. Too much lycra! My eyes!

Indian Surfing with birds

Kovalam – Tamil Nadu.

From Pondicherry I got to Kovalam somehow and ended up in this sleazy dive. An expensive sleazy dive. I went down the beach in the afternoon and there were huge amounts of Indian tourists playing on the beach.

These guys came in straight through the surf. It reminded me of a surf boat race. Very spectacular.

Nothing Happening Here

Filed under: Surfing — Tags: — admin @ 5:38 am

It is a nothing day.

No surf, nothing exciting going on. Just a couple of photos of dudes, body boarders, crabs and trawlers.

body boarder

I got all early to go to the beach this morning, hoping for some good photos of the surfing. When I got there, there were a couple of dudes out. But nothing exciting. No ripping going one. And then everyone came in.

After-surf chat
Finished a surf.

A young Sri Lankan surfer went out just in front but did not catch any decent waves. So no photos of that. Another dud. So I packed up my camera and went to the other side of the harbour for a look-see.

Nothing except a few crabs and some fishermen out in the harbour, trying to catch some little fish with cane rods and fixed fishing line – no reels.

Trawlers in the harbour

The trawlers are still in the harbour. I have not seen many of them going out to sea lately. Nothing happening.

Surfing Hikkaduwa Again

Filed under: Surfing — Tags: — admin @ 5:04 am

Hikkaduwa Surfing Redux.

Well, here I am back in Hikkaduwa. The problem is, it is the end of the season here. The swell yesterday was too big and it was closing out. Today was a bit smaller and there were a few guys out. They did not stay out long. I do not know why. The right-handers were pretty good.

I was hanging out with the Sri Lankan guys who were renting out surfboards. They were also surf instructors and gave lessons to beginners. They told me that the surfboards they hire came from Thailand – some pop-out factory. This guy is lining up the tube.
