Macquarie Marshes – Gibson’s Way

In the afternoon I go for a drive along Gibson’s Way. I stop at the bridge over the Macquarie River to look for finches. There are none. I meet the farmer who says that they have a Whistling Kite nest on his property so I head on over there. There is a wonderful bit of bush along the river on his property with fairy-wrens and friarbirds singing away merrily.

The Whistling Kite nest has a very young chick in it.

I get to the Monkeygar Swamp and the water is over the road. I do not cross because I do not know if my car will make it. I would hate for it to stop in the middle. You never know, it might have made it but I did not want to risk it. There are water birds everywhere. Huge flocks of ducks, spoonbills etc. Even a few Black Swans.

The next morning I pack up camp, take some more photos of the Spotted Bowerbirds bower, forget the grill for my gas cooker and take off for Warren along the Warren-Carinda Road. There are lots of raptors feeding on the road-kills, dead kangaroos hit by cars during the night. It is not a good idea to drive at night in the bush in Australia. Run into a kangaroo or wombat and your car could get totalled.
