Fitzerald Biosphere

After getting petrol and supplies at Ravensthorpe, I decided to go along the Old Ongerup Road and see if I could see something along the western Boundary of the Fitzerald River National Park. I stopped at the West River. There was a little bit of water in it. As soon as I got out of the car, I saw a Restless Flycatcher, then up the road a bit some action.

Black-faced Woodswallow

Black-faced Woodswallow (Artamus cinereus cinereus)

The names of this and the masked have been switched to confuse the unwary.

Inland Thornbill

Inland Thornbill (Acanthiza apicalis apicalis)

And finally I found an Inland Thornbill. You can tell by the reddish eye, chocolate rump, and black subterminal tail band.

Rainbow Bee-eater

Rainbow Bee-eater (Merops ornatus)

There was nowhere to camp near the West River, so I moved on and found a road into the national park, but it just kept on going forever with no roads off and endless vistas of heath country, so I turned around and went back to the highway and found a camp at the Old Fitzgerald School. In the morning I got up early and could hear this screeching.

Regent Parrot - male

Regent Parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus)

This is a male Regent Parrot, with the golden front.

Regent Parrot - female

Regent Parrot (Polytelis anthopeplus) – female

The female is a much duller green.

Purple-crowned Lorikeet

Purple-crowned Lorikeet (Glossopsitta porphyrocephala)

These lorikeets were so noisy, sort of annoying a bit.
