Stokes Inlet Birding

Filed under: Birds — Tags: — admin @ 5:26 am

Stokes National Park

Last night the wind was howling so hard that I just slept out off the highway and did not even bother to cook dinner. In the morning I woke up at 5am and drove to Stokes Inlet – Benwenerup . I found a walking trail and wandered along it for nearly a kilometer.

Western Wattlebird

Western Wattlebird (Anthochaera lunulata)

Brush Bronzewing

Brush Bronzewing (Phaps elegans)

Then I went down to the picnic area next to the lake. A screaming bunch of New Holland Honeyeaters and Brown Honeyeaters were attacking a flowering gum tree.

Brown Honeyeater

Brown Honeyeater (Lichmera indistincta indistincta)

Australian Raven

Australian Raven (Corvus coronoides perplexus)

A decent shot of the western sub-species perplexus at last.

Eastern Osprey

Eastern Osprey (Pandion cristatus)

There were three Eastern Osprey soaring over the picnic area for a while.

Red Wattlebird

Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata woodwardi)

This western sub-species woodwardi has massive wattles and is chomping on what looks like a grasshopper.

Silvereye

Silvereye (Zosterops lateralis chloronotus)

The western race chlornotus with the yellow undertail.

Sacred Kingfisher

Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus)

On the way out I stopped at this creek near the entrance to the national park. There was a big mob of Rainbow Bee-eaters and this Sacred Kingfisher with the unusual rufous and black scalloping on the belly.

Galah

Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla roseicapilla)

At Munglingup, I stopped at the roadhouse for a feed and spotted a couple of Galahs feeding on some dropped grain where the trucks park. The Galah western sub-species roseicapilla has a broad crest, blue-grey orbital skin, and the pink cheek contrasts with the paler hindneck.
