These photos are from Kadidiri Island, where I stayed at the Black Marlin Dive Resort . Every morning I ventured forth into the jungle looking for new birds to photograph. This morning it was raining. But still there are a few good birds.

Alone in the jungle for two nights

Bada Valley

I had an opportunity to stay in a little hut in the jungle on the road to Bada Valley. I had a yoga mat, some cooking utensil, some Indo Mie and some fruit. I was to be alone in the jungle for two nights. The hardest part was sleeping on the wooden boards with only a yoga mat under me. Ouch. But I was rewarded with some good photos and a couple of new birds. So it was worth it in the end.

Knobbed Hornbill - male

Knobbed Hornbill (Rhyticeros cassidix)- male

The Knobbed Hornbill is also known as the Sulawesi wrinkled hornbill. It sounds like a dog barking. For a couple of days I was wondering why there was a dog in the jungle until I realized and saw a female Knobbed Hornbill barking like a dog up in a tree.
“A large bird, a male knobbed hornbill’s body length reaches 70-80 cm and weighs 2.36-2.5 kg. Its body and wings are black with metallic green tinge on its back. Tail white, legs black.”

Knobbed Hornbill - female and male

Knobbed Hornbill (Rhyticeros cassidix)- female and male

“Male bird has high, wrinkled casque that is reddish brown in color. Its crown and nape are brick red-brown. The gular pouch under its mandible is deep blue with a dark line coming around below. Male knobbed hornbill’s eyes are reddish orange.”

Knobbed Hornbill - female

Knobbed Hornbill (Rhyticeros cassidix)- female

“The female has yellow beak with brownish orange folds on the base. Its body and casque are smaller compared to its male counterpart. Casque yellow, head and neck are black. The female’s gular sac has a finer black line. The eyes of a female knobbed hornbill are brownish orange.” (https://rangkong.org/en/enggang-in-indonesia/knobbed-hornbill)

Panorama Pinus Hutan

This morning I was up at 6am, had coffee and headed towards the Hutan Pinus Bukit Panorama Tentena. A hill covered in pine trees just out of town. The road was a bit ornery but I managed to get up it all right in the scooter.

Yellow-billed Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus calyorhynchus)

“The Yellow-billed Malkoha is a species of cuckoo in the family Cuculidae. It is endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. Central Sulawesi Birding 1

Tentena , Sulawesi Tengah

So, after a ten hour bus ride over the mountains with the worst roads in Indonesia, I finally made it to Tentena and I am in Central Sulawesi, Sulawesi Tengah. I got in about 9pm and found an ojek, rental bike and got a lift to the hotel, had a feed, a mandi and crashed out to sleep. I think it is 600 meters altitude. It is nice and cool. In the morning I went for a walk along the lake and followed a road going around the lake to the east. There were a decent amount of birds so I was pretty happy with the result. Time now to render these photos and go for lunch. Some Mie Goreng sounds good. Then coma back and process these photos this afternoon. I have wifi at the hotel so I do not have to rush. I might even take my ten year old out of date Robson to have a peruse while I eat. I hope they have some avocado smoothies. yummm. Update: They had no avocado so I had a sirsak smoothie.

Batutumonga

So this morning I got up early and headed up the mountain towards Batutumonga. I stopped at a few places along the way. The road got very bad in some parts and I was getting jolted all around the bike. I eventually made it up to the top of the hill where I had my morning coffee and Indo-mie.

Country above the clouds – morning

This morning I went back up the mountain to Negeri Atas Awan, The country above the clouds, all the way to the village of Lalao. Right on the top of the mountain there is a bit of a plateau and there are rice fields anywhere there is a bit of flat land. A couple of ticks for me this morning so it was well worth it.

Country Above The Clouds

Negeri Atas Awan

In the afternoon I thought I had better go for a ride before the afternoon downpour started. I found the road to Lalao, the country above the clouds. It just went up and up. I stopped near the top because I saw a raptor and as you will see, it turned out to be an old friend.

Sulawesi Hanging-Parrot

Sulawesi Hanging-Parrot (Loriculus stigmatus)

Also called the Celebes Hanging-Parrot, Great Hanging-Parrot. It is endemic to Sulawesi and nearby smaller islands in Indonesia. Size is about 15 centimeters. It is generally green, with a black bill, forehead and chin red.

Black Kite

Black Kite (Milvus migrans)

I got quite a shock seeing this Black Kite. I did not expect to see him here. They are literally everywhere I go.

White-breasted Woodswallow

Rantepao Toraja Utara

I am now in Tana Toraja, the town of Rantepao. Technically it is Toraja Utara, North Toraja, since Toraja has been split into two divisions. I found a nice hostel, and I have a bike to rent so I can zoom around the countryside. Which I did this morning. I headed towards La’bo and then kept going until I found a nice creek with some bush alongside it.

Sulawesi Blue Flycatcher

Sulawesi Blue Flycatcher (Cyornis omissus)

The Sulawesi Blue Flycatcher is endemic to Indonesia. They are mainly found in subtropical moist lowland forests or montane forests. Its range is mostly Sulawesi, hence the name, doh! Their diet includes flies, termites, aphids and other small invertebrates.
