Tawau Hills National Park 2

16th January, 2020. This morning I got up before 7am and walked around football field to try and find some hornbills. I could hear some but they were good at hiding themselves. After that I crossed the rickety bridge. Then I went to world’s tallest tropical tree, came back and found a nice surprise just behind the entrance gate.

Green Leafbird - female
Green Leafbird – female

This is either a female Lesser Green Leafbird (Chloropsis cyanopogon) or Greater Green Leafbird (Chloropsis sonnerati). It seems they are very hard to tell apart. I am going for the Lesser Green Leafbird.

Bornean SpiderHunter
Bornean SpiderHunter (Arachnothera everetti)

In Malay it is called the Kelicap Jantung Bukit.

Red-naped Trogon - female
Red-naped Trogon (Harpactes kasumba) – female

Rhinoceros Hornbill
Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros)

This one scared the daylights out of me when it landed on the life guard hut looking over the river. I photographed it for a while, then it flew straight at me. I later found out that it had been rehabilitated at the park and goes around harrassing people. Ha ha , too funny.

Asian Glossy Starling - adults
Asian Glossy Starling (Aplonis panayensis)

The Malay for Asian Glossy Starling is Perling Mata Merah. Which means something red eyed. Quite appropriate I think. Much better than the boring english name.

Yellow-vented Bulbul
Yellow-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier)

Tawau Hills National Park bird list

Bornean SpiderHunter (Arachnothera everetti)
Lesser Green Leafbird (Chloropsis cyanopogon) or Greater Green Leafbird (Chloropsis sonnerati) ???

Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros)
Yellow-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier)
