The Barry Way

Snowy Mountains

This weekend I escaped from the hordes by going along The Barry Way which goes from Jindabyne and skirts the Snowy Mountains to Buchan in Victoria and goes down to Cann River, on the eastern coast of Victoria. It is a very rugged road with some wild country and no people. I saw two people the whole weekend.

The road turns to dirt pretty quickly and winds down some very steep hills. I stopped at Jacob’s River and set up camp there.

In the morning a mob of Brown Treecreepers invaded my camp and pecked around me less than a meter away at times. They were very tame and not frightened at all. The Superb Fairy-wrens did the same and were pecking around my feet at times.

I went for a walk that morning and spotted some Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters having a feed in the eucalyptus trees.

There were also quite a few Eastern Yellow Robin.

And Speckled Warblers as well as quite a few thornbills that I could not identify.

On the way back, I stopped at the Wallace Craigie Lookout which is at 894 meters. The clouds were rolling in underneath the peaks and I was driving up through the mist to get my head above the clouds.

I had been thinking that all these boulders around the area were glacial moraines, but according to the tourist bureau, they were weathered igneous rocks such as granite, that contained a lot of feldspar and quartz.
