Tikal Part Two

The second part of my day out at Tikal, Peten. The highlight of the day would have been this Slaty-tailed Trogon but she was under the canopy and the photos were really crap. šŸ™

Slaty-tailed Trogon - female
Slaty-tailed Trogon (Trogon massena) female

This is the female with an all grey back and chest. The male has some green around the shoulders.

Lesson's Motmot
Lesson’s Motmot (Momotus lessonii)

Another crap photo in bad light in the same area – Grupo F. I am less than impressed.

Mangrove Swallow
Mangrove Swallow (Tachycineta albilinea)

The final new bird for the day was the Mangrove Swallow which I saw at the lake on the walk back to the hostel. It has some white on the rump, which is pretty much diagnostic.

Pale-billed Woodpecker
Pale-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus guatemalensis)

More bad photos in shocking light conditions. grrr.. This is a female with black under the chin.

Northern Jacana with chick
Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa)

This Northern Jacana was on the pond at Tikal. You can see its baby following along behind her. Its spanish name is Jacana NorteƱa.

Northern Jacana - immature
Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa)

This immature Northern Jacana was at the lake at El Remate.

Melodious Blackbird
Melodious Blackbird (Dives dives)

Not a cowbird because it has not got red eyes.

Bare-throated Tiger-Heron
Bare-throated Tiger-Heron (Tigrisoma mexicanus)

You can see the bare yellow patch on the throat under the bill. And the stripes on the flanks which give it its name.

Green Heron
Green Heron (Butorides viriscens)

This Green Heron was stalking something on the edge of the lake.

White-collared Seedeater
White-collared Seedeater (Sporophila torqueola)

This White-collared Seedeater male is having a hissy fit. Tranquilo!
